An enchanting evening in San Diego played host to Sydney-based singer/songwriter, grentperez at the renowned venue of House of Blues. In celebration of his first debut album, Backflips in a Restaurant, grentperez performed it in its entirety and couldn’t help but save some “Cherry Wine” for dessert.
The visuals, storytelling, costumes, and set design for this evening truly captured the imagery that one would feel when listening to the album. grentperez’ entrance alone with intro track “Nice to Meet You,” captured the audience both musically and visually when his silhouette appeared lit behind a façade of a restaurant window. Cheers and screams from the audience were resonant with my own reaction seeing this as the opening to his set.
A few moments throughout the night struck me emotionally. One such moment was when grentperez brought 2 a couple to sit at arguably the best seat in the house - his “dinner table” on stage. The two shared a loving kiss while being serenaded by the band where one musician notably played a violin to really seal the “romantic date” deal. This moment made me appreciate the kindness that grentperez has for his fans, which was even further implicated when fans presented gifts throughout the night.
This artist’s voice, musical talent, and kind heart left me with a long-lasting great impression. When the very last song on the new album had been played, grentperez did not leave us without some delicious cherry-flavored dessert. Just as any restaurant should, we were recommended some classics such as “Cherry-Wine,” one of the singer’s most popular releases. I loved listening to this song on record and hearing it live made it much more special.
The night was filled with love, laughter, passion and till certainly be one I’ll never forget. With that, night one of the Backflips in a Restaurant Tour had officially concluded.
